This also helps when you deliver the finishing blow, because if you take the enemy down to a certain number of negative hit points, you'll get an overkill, which allows you to bind the Majin and then capture it. Each enemy has a weakness, so it's useful to determine what it is and exploit it to make the battle go more swiftly. As the party leader (which changes depending on which story you follow), you can use the lead command, where if other members of the party wait on their turn, they save their attack to perform a powerful combo with the leader. Depending on your character, you'll move them closer to the enemy so you can engage in a melee attack otherwise you can hang back and cast spells or attack with a long-ranged weapon. The bottom of the screen tells you which unit or character is up next, so you can plan accordingly. As in past SRPGs, fights take place on a battleground where you move your characters on a grid to get closer to the enemy and then issue commands. Together they teach you the basics of battle. Raki-short for Ranunculus-is her trusty, wolflike companion, who just happens to be a Majin (demon). You begin the game with a prologue that introduces Thage, a lovely young woman with a thing for black lace. You'll get to know Thage really well if you choose to follow her storyline. The game even throws in multiple storylines to pursue, as well as a demon-collecting system in which you can bind, capture, and then summon them to fight for you. Eternal Poison doesn't do much in terms of creating a unique and original experience, but it works well if you're looking for a standard SRPG to play. This strategy role-playing game delves into darker, gothic themes and has a rather cliche "save the princess" plotline-a story that has been told countless times in video games in a variety of ways. There are no advanced controls, and if you have ever played a turn-based RPG, youll be able to jump right into this title quite easily.Eternal Poison was released in Japan earlier this year under the name Poison Pink. Controls only consist of using the D-pad to navigate command menus and move around and using the X button to confirm menu selections. Although it is interesting to note that despite the games very dark and gothic appearance, the music is quite upbeat.Ĭontrols are fairly standard as far as menu-based RPGs are concerned. The music in Eternal Poison is also very good and features some nice thematic tunes for each level. However, the voiceover is still very good, and stars like Johnny Yong Bosch (best known for his work as Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and as Ichigo in the Bleach series) do an excellent job lending their voices to this title.

The voiceover is entirely in English, and, unfortunately, there is no option to switch to the original Japanese. Sound in this title is fairly good, with some great voiceovers and nice background music to go with it. Still, this title stands head and shoulders above most other PlayStation 2 titles and looks very good overall. However, in-game graphics and environments are nondescript, and you can expect to see a lot of repetitive elements throughout the battle stages. Cutscenes are animated very well, and character models are close to current-gen quality. The graphics in this title are surprisingly good for a title on an aging system. Although this mini-game isnt that exciting, it is a nice departure from battle grinding, and provides a nice challenge. One of the first that you will encounter is a peg-board style game that challenges you to solve patterned puzzles similar to what you would see in an IQ-testing book. In addition to the battle sequences, there are a few entertaining mini-games that you can play to unlock new stages and items.
